How did this reunion planning get started? The planning committee took shape with just a few phone calls and emails to a few Savelli and Dito cousins who expressed an interest in making this fun event happen for our family. We all had different ideas, but we all wanted the same result: have a fun time with our cousins from near and far. We're hoping to start a new tradition now, in 2012, following in the footsteps of our great-grandparents, grandparents and parents who made their family occasions special and memorable.

As we plan our get-together in North Beach on July 14, I think about all the details -- the restaurant, the invitations, the website, the fun parts -- and I'm also filled with nostalgia. I bet many of you are thinking about your memories, too. For some, it's memories of macaron' cu pep', or fried peppers with anchovies, or maybe (g)rispedi or Nana's bally soup. For others, it may be celebrating Tata's birthday on the Fourth of July, with firecrackers in the alley behind the house on Union Street. Or maybe you remember rolling down the grassy hill in front of Richie's house, or singing Christmas carols with Auntie Florence at her annual Christmas party. Do you remember Louie's cabin in Tahoe?
What else do you remember about family parties? What traditions do you try to keep alive?
In some ways, it's easier to stay in touch than even before, considering many of us are on Facebook, have email, smartphones and blogs. However, in another way, we're all apart from each other. We type notes about our special moments on a keypad that allows us to receive responses from others. But, we miss the human experience of sharing a story, a laugh, and the joy of celebration.
When July comes around, I'll look forward to seeing you in North Beach. In the meantime, as the planning progresses, you can find the luncheon info here. More details to come!
Sandy
